Legacy West Midlands is delighted to share exciting news that marks a milestone for Birmingham’s cultural landscape.
As part of Birmingham’s new Cultural Action Area (CAA), we are proud to announce the winners of the Creative Commissions 2025. This initiative, funded by Birmingham City Council and delivered in partnership with the Bangladeshi Artist Development Agency (BADA), highlights the power of culture to strengthen communities, support local economies, and re-energise our high streets.
Investing in Culture and Community
The Cultural Action Area (CAA) programme is an ambitious investment in Birmingham’s cultural and heritage offer. Its aim is simple but powerful:
“To harness the rich cultural heritage and diversity of Handsworth, build community pride, and position the area as a thriving, creative, and economically resilient part of Birmingham.”
Through the programme, three talented artists have been commissioned to create bold, inspiring new work. Their projects will explore themes of diversity, inclusivity, and compassion, reflecting the richness of our communities and showcasing the role of creativity in bringing people together.
Spotlight on Bangla Month 2025
In addition to these commissions, two further artists of Bangladeshi heritage have been supported through BADA’s inaugural Creative Commission. Their work will form part of Bangla Month 2025, a landmark cultural festival celebrating Bangladeshi heritage and creativity across Birmingham and the West Midlands.
Audiences can look forward to exhibitions, performances, and creative installations that not only celebrate the theme of COMPASSION but also shine a light on the extraordinary talent emerging from our city.
Building a Thriving Creative Future
These commissions are about more than producing new artworks. They represent an investment in people, place, and pride, ensuring that Handsworth and the wider West Midlands continue to be recognised as a hub of creativity and innovation.
We warmly congratulate all the selected artists and look forward to sharing their journeys and showcasing their work in the months ahead.
Stay tuned for further updates as we prepare for Bangla Month 2025 and continue to develop the Cultural Action Area programme.
