Birmingham Museums Trust (BMT) is calling on members of the community to take part in a series of engagement events, which will contribute to an upcoming display of the Trust’s African collection.
As guardians of a world-class collection, and active contributors of social change. BMT is the largest independent trust in the UK, we care for around one million objects, stored, and displayed in nine unique and historic venues, including six listed buildings.
BMT’s Global Majority Collections comprise of more than nine thousand objects, emanating from Africa, Oceania, Asia and the Americas most of this “ethnographic” material originates from the private collections of individuals who had some personal connection with Birmingham or the wider Midlands.
Research of the nineteen hundred objects in the African collection will lead to a new display at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery. To support this work, BMT invites members of the community to join a series of community engagement events. The sessions offer participants the opportunity to find out more about objects in the collection and share their knowledge, which will contribute to how the collection is interpreted and displayed.
