Outdoor film screening of Carmen Jones

Carmen Jones is a 1954 American musical film featuring an African American cast starring Harry Belafonte, Dorothy Dandridge, and Pearl Bailey and produced and directed by Otto Preminger. The screenplay by Harry Kleiner is based on the lyrics and book by Oscar Hammerstein II, from the 1943 stage musical of the same name, set to the music of Georges Bizet's 1875 opera Carmen. In 1992, Carmen Jones was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”.

Carmen Jones (1954) with a spectaculair cast and opera at it's most passionate. The film takes us on a journey of a feisty and sultry young woman working at a bustling parachute factory, who gets herself in to a bit of a brawl leading her to be driven to a non-military police base by Air Force officer, Joe.

As the story unfolds of a bold, rebellious factory worker, Carmen Jones on the big screen plays out in this historic setting. Soho House, once the home of Matthew Boulton, a key figure of the Industrial Revolution. The perfect backdrop for a film that echoes the spirit of industry, ambition, and transformation.

Soak in the atmosphere, and enjoy food and drinks from our very own The Friends of Handsworth Park Tea & Social team.  Enjoy a film under the stars with the elegant backdrop of one of Birmingham’s most beautiful heritage sites.
